Hundreds of cuppas and home baked goodies have raised nearly £1,000 for the latest two charities to benefit from Nellie’s Community Cafe at Sutton.

The cafe opens twice a month at Scott Court residential home and after six months all of the profits are handed over to worthy causes.

Since launching the project in 2011 the cafe volunteers have handed over £12,000 to a host of local and national charities.

The latest to benefit are Wood Green Animal Shelter who were given £394 and Branching Out, a Littleport charity for children with learning disabilities, who were handed a cheque for £591.

Volunteer Helen Malkin said: “We all have a good natter and a catch up and fun while serving up goodies.

“We started off just running the cafe once a month but it has proved so popular we upped it to twice.”

For six months the cafe chooses two good causes and cafe customers vote for who how they would like the money to be split by dropping a token into a box.

The next two groups to benefit will be Scamps baby and toddler group and Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.
