THOUSANDS of people across the country took part in the BBC's Sport Relief Mile event on Saturday. Among them, were Arthur Cutter, from Ely and pupils from Mepal and Witcham Primary School and Little Thetford Primary School.

Mr Cutter raised £224 for the BBC's Sport Relief on Saturday after he made an impulse decision to carry out a spur-of-the-moment fund-raising activity.

Mr Cutter, who is disabled, was at Ely Market when he remembered that the day marked the start of national fund-raising through sporting activities.

"I said, 'it's Sport Relief today', what shall we do?"

With the help of market traders who were standing by with his wheelchair, Mr Cutter completed four laps of the Market Square on crutches with a collection bucket donated by Wilko in Cloisters.

Mr Cutter's impromptu effort raised £224.60 for the cause.
