Hundreds of primary school children from around East Cambridgeshire have spent the week at Ely fire station learning how to stay safe at home and outdoors.
Year five pupils from Littleport Community School, Ely St Mary’s, Wilburton, Little Thetford, Robert Arkenstall, Millfield, Ely St John’s, King’s Ely, Mepal and Witcham and the Lantern School were invited to the Schools Safety Zone Challenge, which ran from October 17 to 21.
The children were involved in eight different workshops which covered road safety, the internet, railways, animal and dog safety, fire safety, water safety and awareness, buying of safe goods and anti-social behaviour.
Delivering the safety messages were the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership, Cambridgeshire Constabulary, British Transport Police, Wood Green Animal Charity, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and Trading Standards.
Dave Rees, watch commander said: “This has been a great week giving the children a fantastic opportunity to learn some potentially life saving messages.
“I would like to express my thanks to all the agencies involved for supporting the event, the volunteers and the firefighters at Ely for all their hard work in making this annual event a great success, particularly firefighter Darren Fox who lead on the organisation of the event.”
