MORE than 360 children from schools across the district took part in a Safety Zone event at Ely Fire Station to raise awareness about their personal safety.

The event brought together Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue, the police, St John Ambulance, EDF Energy and the county council to give pupils important safety lessons.

Children were divided into small groups and were given advice and instruction on testing smoke alarms, the danger of overhead power lines, how to make a call to the emergency services and how to put someone in the recovery position.

Julie Sandbrook, East Cambridgeshire's district community safety officer, said: "The aim really is to get the children outside of the classroom in a to learn about their own personal safety in a way that's fun and interactive."

INFO: Other schools in the district will be taking part in a second event in Newmarket, from October 31-November 1.
