A family occasion saw plenty of people turn out to the Upherds Lane allotments when a new water butt was officially opened.
Mayor coucillor Ian Lindsay, who has an allotment there, cut the ribbon and started the water flowing for the new water butt for the allotment holders.
Installed by Manit Construction it was paid for thanks to a grant from the Tesco bags of help scheme.
Chairman Graham Bond said: ‘It will make a vast difference as the winter has been dry and we could have a dry year.’
There are 45 allotments on the site all taken.
After many years of discussion and waiting, piped water was finally installed at three of the city of Ely Allotments Association sites- Canterbury Avenue, New Barns and Upherds Lane during the 2016/17 winter.
This project was made possible with a grant from the Tesco ‘Bags of Help’ scheme which ploughs back the 5p carrier bag charge into local community schemes.
The water is now officially switched on and ready for use at these sites.
