A former Archbishop of Canterbury was among a group of new canons admitted and installed at Ely Cathedral.

At evensong, on November 25, four new honorary canons and two lay canons were installed at the cathedral under the watchful eye of Stephen Conway, the Bishop of Ely.

Among them were Rowan Williams, who stood down as leader of the Church of England in 2012. Lord Williams is now master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.

Also made honorary canons were Rev Dr Malcolm Brown, Ven Dr Alex Hughes, Archdeacon of Cambridge, and Rev Prof Huw Jones, Rural Dean of Cambridge South.

Installed as lay canons were Jan Payne, the bishop’s adviser for music, and Peter Maxwell, chairman of the Diocese of Ely Multi-Academy Trust.
