A ROW over tomato sauce and a Sunday roast dinner led to Richard Barnes smashing a dining chair at his girlfriend’s home in Ely.

Barnes told her to “shut up” during the incident, and the chair made two holes in the carpet as it hit the ground.

Barnes, 30, of Hall Lane, Burwell, appeared before city magistrates on Thursday, when he admitted causing damage to the chair on January 11.

“The police found the chair at the back of the house in pieces,” solicitor Adam Haselhurst told Fenland magistrates. “When he smashed the chair on the floor the legs came off, and he took it outside, and broke the chair up.” Barnes and his girlfriend have since split up, he added.

The court gave Barnes a two-year conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £25 compensation and £43 costs.
