A ROTARIAN has completed a 50 mile sponsored walk along the North Norfolk coast path, raising £1,100 for a nursery school in Gambia.

Christine Gascoigne, president-elect of the Ely Hereward Rotary Club, walked for four days and the proceeds will be spent on building and equipping a new classroom at the Mansa Colley nursery school.

The new classroom will allow another 50 children from the village, who at the moment have to walk five miles each way to the school in the nearby town, to attend the local school.

The club has also been working closely with the charity Sponsor a Gambian child, which helps to pay for the children’s education, buys them their school uniform and makes sure they have a hot meal in the middle of the day.

Mrs Gascoigne will travel to Gambia next March to see the new classroom, meet some of the children and teachers and discuss with the village elders other ways the rotary club might help the school.
