The crash in Little Downham.

One motorcyclist was killed and another seriously injured after two crashes within 24 hours on the region's roads.

Anthony Jarvis, 26, died when his motorcycle crashed into a Transit van in Littleport on Friday afternoon.

The previous day, a 37-year-old Ely man was seriously hurt when he was trapped under a rotavating machine on the back of a tractor.

The crashes happened just weeks after Cambridgeshire County Council highways engineers erected signs across the district alerting drivers to motorcyclists and urging riders to take extra care.

Mr Jarvis, of High Street, Soham was riding his bike along Wisbech Road at about 3.30pm when the crash happened just west of the junction with Camel Road.

The 21-year-old van driver from Wisbech and his 44-year-old passenger were unhurt in the crash.

In the earlier crash, which happened at about 1.40pm on Thursday in Ely Road, Little Downham, firefighters freed the motorcyclist and the road was closed back to the A10 roundabout for more than six hours.

The rider was taken to Cambridge's Addenbrooke's Hospital where his condition was critical but not thought to be life-threatening.

Anyone with any information about either accident is asked to call the Road Policing Unit on 0845 456 4564.
