CITY of Ely councillor Richard Hobbs joined former mayor of Ely John Yates and members of the Barns Community Voice residents group to open a new Multi Use Games Area on Sunday.

The Community Voice group have been campaigning for the new sports facility for more than three years and their hard work was finally brought to a head at the weekend when the 40,000 facility was opened.

John Grain, chairman of Barns Community Voice, said: “Getting the games area took time to organise but the city council have worked hard to get this for us and we are all very pleased with it.

“It is already being very well used by local children and that is what we wanted to achieve.”

As part of the opening, there was also a residents community day, with family activities and races and a bouncy castle.
