More wreaths than ever before laid in Chatteris as hundreds turnout for Remembrance Sunday 2018

Forty-five wreaths - more than any previous year - were laid in Chatteris for Remembrance Sunday 2018.

Hundreds lined the streets of the high street to honour the fallen, with children and their parents and grandparents stood together for Armistice Day.

With the parade making its way from Furrowfields car park to St Peter & St Paul Parish Church, the wreathes were then laid at the church’s memorial.

Defying the cold chill, one military veteran even attended the service in a kilt.

Norman Larke, chairman of the Chatteris branch of the Royal British Legion, lead the wreath-laying service and said: “How nice to see so many people here this afternoon.”

He added: “This year we have laid 45 wreaths which is the most we’ve ever had here in Chatteris”

Wreaths were laid by organisations including Chatteris Town Council, Fenland District Council, the Chatteris branch of the Royal British Legion, Ladies Section and Poppy Committee, RAF Wicken and United States Visiting Forces, Royal Naval Association, Queens Dragoon Guards, Army Catering Corps Association, Labour Party, Cambridgeshire Constabulary, HM Prison Service, Army Cadet Force, Salvation Army, Chatteris Fire Service, Peterborough Hindu Community and Sikh Community of Peterborough, Women’s Institute and Women’s Morning WI, Chatteris Rotary Club, What Next, St Raphael, Emmanuel Church, Chatteris Scouts, Chatteris Guides, Chatteris 3rd troop Rainbows, Cromwell Community College, Kingsfield School, Chatteris Boxing Club, Chatteris Town Football Club and Chatteris Cricket Club.

The deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Neil McKittrick, also laid a wreath at the memorial.
