TWO world records have been set in Ely - and it's now official.

The American-based World Records Academy has recognised Ely as having the longest bridge made from plastic bottles.

The second record is for the longest walk on a bridge made from plastic bottles, which was carried out by Ely mayor, councillor Ron Bradney, who walked across the River Great Ouse at Ely Rowing Club's second classic regatta on June 23.

The 36-metre bridge, made from 14,250 four-pint milk bottles and named the Four Pint Bridge, was the creation of former district councillor Jack Waterfall.

Mr Waterfall wanted to highlight the need to recycle and the bridge represented the amount of plastic that people in Cambridgeshire use each day by lunch time.

He said: "It is really great to get international recognition for the Four-Pint Bridge. In the two months since we managed to cross the River Great Ouse using 14,250 empty four-pinters, my team has been suffering from a 'so what anticlimax', having sustained a six-month build-up with only a 20-minute moment of glory to show for it.

"This accolade has done wonders in restoring our faith in doing wacky little schemes like this."

The records will be featured in the 2008 edition of the World Records Book and an official certificate will be issued to councillor Bradney.
