PARKING on a taxi rank for five minutes landed Ely man Ben Coleman with a bill for £75 last week.

Coleman, of Lantern Court, High Street, admitted parking on the rank at Ely Market Place on November 18, and he was fined £40 with £35 costs by city magistrates.

Writing to the court, Coleman complained that apart from the word "taxi" painted on the road, there were no signs saying parking was forbidden.

General parking restrictions finished at 6pm, he said, and he thought it was "a harsh decision" to prosecute him for parking on the rank at 7.30pm.

The court was told that Coleman already had an outstanding £60 fine for wilfully obstructing the highway, and that will be consolidated with the latest fine.
