A post office has been targeted by ram raiders overnight who stole the cash machine and made off in a black vehicle.

Officers were called to reports of a burglary at the One Stop Store and Post Office in Feltwell at around 3am.

Suspects forced entry into the building and removed the cash machine from inside before loading it onto what is believed to be a small black vehicle.

Police have said they believe a car which was in found alight outside the shop was involved in the ram raid

No one was injured as a result of the incident, and the road has been closed and cordoned off while investigations continue.

A resident who lives on the High Street and did not wish to be named, said she heard noises and described the incident as terrifying.

'I heard everything. There were voices and a loud bang,' she said.

She added: 'I was really worried for my friend as it was so near to her. I saw the flames and came out of the house into the street, I shouted to people if the fire service were called and they said yes and the police were there.'

A staff member at Londis, who also did not want to be named, said the One Stop had only been refurbished a few years ago.

She said: 'We feel for them definitely. You're trying to build up a business in the village and then something like this happens.

'You just have to protect yourself as best you can but sometimes you cannot stop them.'

It is believed the old Post Office was targeted four or five years ago and the Londis was targeted more than 12 years ago.

A customer, who has lived in the village for 53 years, said it was dreadful for the village and the shop owners.

'It is such a shame they are really nice people and so polite,' she said. 'I come down here and get my milk. It is dreadful.'

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said the shop is used regularly. He said: 'It is not nice I must admit. But these days that is life.'
