POLICE were called into a secondary school on Tuesday after reports that a teenage boy had a gun.

Officers attended Witchford Village College on Manor Road at about 3pm after teachers and pupils became concerned that a 14-year-old had brought an air rifle into school.

It is not clear how that the pupil, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was able to get the weapon into the school but it is understood that he was challenged by a teacher, who subsequently contacted police.

The pupil was arrested after officers arrived and was taken to Parkside Police Station in Cambridge.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire police confirmed that officers had attended the college after reports that the pupil had brought a gun into school.

The spokesman said that the pupil was later interviewed and charged with possession of an imitation firearm in a public place.

The 14-year-old was then bailed by police to appear at Ely Youth Court on March 10.

The spokesman stressed that there was no suggestion of a threat to other pupils.

Witchford Village College is accredited as a specialist sports facility and currently caters for about 900 pupils across five year groups.

In August last year, the college achieved record exam results with 83.5 per cent of Year 11 pupils gaining at least five GCSEs at grades A* to C

Vice-principal of Witchford Village College Jason Wing, confirmed that police had visited the college on Tuesday but was unwilling to comment further on the matter while the police investigation was taking place.
