A project is being launched to help recognise distinctive and historical buildings in East Cambridgeshire.

The ‘Buildings of Local Interest’ scheme will recognise the significant buildings and structures which define the district and could range from houses to bridges, war memorials and walls, street furniture, monuments and designed landscapes.

While inclusion on the list is not the same as being listed, those who qualify to become Buildings of Local Interest will have their listing taken into consideration should they be involved in a planning application.

All owners of nominated buildings and structures will be consulted to allow them sufficient time to make any representations. All comments received - for and against - a nomination will be considered by, what the council called, an “independent panel of experts”.

Councillor Peter Moakes, chairman of the development and transport committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: ““Inclusion on the ‘Buildings of Local Interest’ register will highlight the unsung heroes of our architectural heritage which are not as obvious as churches and grand halls but are important to communities. “They could be structures such as the WWII pill box that you used to play in as a child or the old pub on the corner – our aim is to consider anything which enriches our lives”.

Nominations to be part of the project can be made through www.eastcambs.gov.uk, by post or by e-mail to the conservation officer and should be received no later than 4pm on May 2.
