King’s Ely Senior welcomed Professor Stephen Church of the University of East Anglia (UEA) to address the whole school this week as part of its Medieval Week.
He spoke students and staff on the rule of King John and the significance of Magna Carta, explored King John’s failings as a sovereign, which led to the Barons’ war and the proclamation of Magna Carta, before delving deeper into its enduring wider significance.
Afterwards, Professor Church was answered questions during a Q&A session with our Sixth Form Historians who are all studying Medieval History as part of their A Level courses.

Stephen Church is professor of medieval history at the University of East Anglia and widely acclaimed as an expert on twelfth-century kingship, especially the reign of King John.
He is a member of the council of the Society of Antiquaries and is actively involved in the national commemoration of the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta in 2015.
