The minor injuries unit at Ely’s Princess of Wales Hospital has reduced its opening hours again after the pressure on Addenbrooke’s Hospital subsided.

From today the Lynn Road hospital’s hours will revert once more to 8.30am-6pm, Monday to Sunday, having been open from 8am-8pm since January.

The decision was taken to extend the opening hours to help relieve some of the pressure on the accident and emergent department at Addenbrooke’s, in Cambridge, which was under pressure from a surge in patient numbers.

The Isle of Ely Local Commissioning Group and Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust, which manage the Princess of Wales, said that pressure had subsided sufficiently to allow the opening hours at Ely to return to normal.

Judy Dance, head of clinical services for the NHS trust, said: “Now that the winter period is drawing to a close and the pressure is easing on local A&E departments we have decided to resume the unit’s normal opening times as planned.

“However, people from Ely with a minor injury should still go to the unit between 8.30am-6.00pm Monday to Sunday, as A&E is for life threatening emergencies only.”
