WE are always being reminded that Ely is the fastest growing city in Europe and that we have a rich history to attract tourists and visitors.

Why then, does the local authority permit the owner of the derelict ex-vegetable greengrocer shop in Market Street to neglect the building in such a manner?

The building is now, not only an eyesore right in the middle of the city, but also a danger to the nearby buildings. The windows have been smashed and litter lines the interior. How long will it be before a cigarette is thrown into the building and a major fire is caused which may spread to the terrace of shops?

Surely the council has some power to act on this? Particularly in these days of costly litigation and public safety legislation.

I'd like to see others come forward and criticise this monstrosity.
