STRIKE action by postal workers in East Cambridgeshire and across the country will go ahead from this morning (Thursday) after last minute to avert the strikes failed.
Union leaders and Royal Mail bosses have been engaging in discussion for the last 48-hours in a bid to stave off the damaging strike action but late last night it was announced that two-days of strike action would commence as planned.
Around 70 workers at offices in Ely, Soham, Haddenham and Isleham will join the walkouts on a rolling basis, with distribution workers striking on Thursday and delivery workers walking-out on Friday.
Union bosses have also warned of further strike action in the coming weeks and fears about a backlog of undelivered mail in East Cambs have already begun to surface in the build-up to the busy Christmas period.
