Businessman Devinder Singh has submitted a planning application to convert a former bed shop into a convenience store and post office.

Mr Singh, of Queen Adelaide, has applied to East Cambridgeshire District Council to transform the former More than Beds shop, in Market Street, into a convenience store which could also house Ely’s post office.

The city’s post office branch has been run out of a portable building in the Paradise Centre car park since November last year but Mr Singh’s plans could see it returned to the heart of the city again.

The businessman has applied to the council to replace the wooden windows and doors of the shop, part of the older Central Hall, with double glazed units and an automatic door.

A decision on the plans is expected within the next eight weeks. To view the plans, or to have a say, visit www.eastcambs.gov.uk
