A POLICE outreach office based in Littleport has been closed down.

PCSOs used the office space at St George’s Medical Centre, in Parson’s Lane, as a base while they patrolled the village, with villagers also welcomed into surgery sessions.

In recent months however, the medical centre has unveiled plans to expand and Cambridgeshire police were asked to move on by bosses at the medical centre.

A Cambridgeshire police spokesman said: “The police surgery office based at the Littleport Medical Centre has closed.

“There was an agreement between the Constabulary and the medical centre that with notice, if the room wasn’t being used or needed, the room would be handed back.

“The mobile police station will be available for future police surgeries for local residents and officers will still be in the local area.”

County councillor for Littleport, Fred Brown, said: “To be honest, I don’t think police made the best use of the facility and increased facilities at the medical centre will be a real benefit to the village.”

The centre was recently granted permission by East Cambridgeshire District Council to erect two large cabins for extra surgery space and a new pharmacy.

The permission was granted despite the concerns of the county conservation officer, who said the design quality of the cabins were not good enough and more suited to a “building site”.
