Cambridgeshire Constabulary is re-appealing for the public’s help to trace a car that was involved in hit and run that caused a local footballer to lose his legs and left another seriously injured.

The force now believes it was a silver Ford Focus with a 2006 number plate which failed to stop following the collision on Dullingham Road on July 1, that left 27-year-old Shaun Whiter and 30-year-old Joey Abbs with severe injuries.

PC Ash Bennett said: “We would like to appeal for witnesses to this tragic and heinous incident which has left a man with both legs amputated below the knee.

“Anyone who is aware of any damaged vehicles matching the description of the Ford Focus involved or any other information, no matter how insignificant, is asked to get in touch.”

Mr Whiter, who plays football for Newmarket Town, had pulled up at about 10.55pm to help Soham Town Rangers’ Joey Abbs change a tyre after he suffered a puncture.

The Ford Focus ploughed into the back of Mr Whiter’s BMW 320, pinning him to the boot of his car. He was hit with such force that it shunted his car into the back of Mr Abbs’ Vauxhall Astra, pinning him between the two cars.

Both men were airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, but Mr Whiter’s injuries were so severe that both legs were amputated below the knee.

The two men have been inundated with support since the accident, and over £50,000 has been raised via JusGiving to help them on their road to recovery.

The two pages can be found here and here.

Anyone with information on the incident should call PC Bennett or Sergeant Keith Evans at the Roads Policing Unit on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
