VANDALS armed with a chainsaw went on a wrecking spree in Littleport in the early hours of Monday morning chopping down trees.
They sliced through a 20-year-old, 40-feet sycamore tree at one home in Church Lane leaving half the trunk lying across the road.
Another 15-year-old sycamore tree was sent crashing into the car park at the nearby Limes Nursing Home and branches were sliced from a cedar tree outside the churchyard near the Harley Davidson memorial.
Then the thugs moved onto the High Street where they sawed through a tree outside the public toilets.
Now police are scanning CCTV cameras to see if the vandals were captured on film.
Chris Grant, manager of the Limes Nursing Home, said: "One of the trees came straight across our car park. It's lucky it happened overnight because it could have been very dangerous."
Homeowner, Michael Paling, of Church Lane, lost a sycamore tree he planted 20 years ago.
He said: "It's very sad. No-one heard anything - it's unbelievable."
East Cambridgeshire District Council workers were sent to make the cedar tree safe after the thugs left branches lying on a wall.
