ELY police are clamping down on disabled drivers who misuse their special badges to park irresponsibly around the city.

Officers and councillors have received complaints that some disabled motorists are causing long delays in the city centre by parking on yellow lines.

They have been warned they face a £1,000 fine if they are caught breaking the law.

Ely police north neighbourhood beat sergeant Paul Rogerson said: "It is essential that disabled drivers and those with disabled passengers have easy access to the city centre.

"I want to support the use of disabled badges in our city. I ask that users of badges use them responsibly and in a way which allows the free movement of traffic around the city. It is also important that able- bodied drivers exercise patience when negotiating around legally parked uses of disabled badges."
