EARL Gernon threw his girlfriend’s suitcase across the road as they had a row on Littleport railway station.

Three signal staff at the station had watched the couple’s public spat, and police were called to the platform.

“Staff had become aware of a couple shouting at each other, their mouths were moving and their arms were flailing,” Ely magistrates were told by Laura Mardell, prosecuting.

“The female looked upset; the male picked up a suitcase and threw it into a grass verge. She sat on a fence, and the male was walking up and down, shouting.

“He then retrieved the suitcase and threw it on the road; the argument continued; the male walked backwards and stumbled over the suitcase.”

Railway station staff checked on the woman, and she was still upset when a police officer arrived. Gernon admitted there had been an argument, and he had thrown the suitcase.

In court, 28-year-old Gernon, of Church Farm, Kenny Hill, admitted using threatening or abusive words or behaviour with intent to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

Gernon agreed he had been angry in the heat of the argument, and used insulting words with the intention of causing distress.

Mitigating, Michael Judkins said Gernon had started a new job a month before the incident on October 5; and the couple had argued about the amount of time he had devoted to the job.

“She had decided to pack her case and return to Manchester for a period of time,” he said. “They made up, and she did not go to Manchester.”

Gernon was fined 200 and the court ordered him to pay another 100 in costs and surcharge.
