A POLICE car was used to block the path of a teenage driver who had been followed in the dark to Fisherman's car park in Ely.

Eighteen-year-old Frederick Lesurf had turned his car's headlights off during the incident - and on Thursday the youngster admitted inconsiderate driving.

Police had first seen Lesurf behind the wheel of a Peugeot 306 in Broad Street car park, said prosecutor Laura Mardell.

"On seeing the police car, he drove off into Broad Street, and the officer started to follow," she said. "He noted that the vehicle's headlights had been switched off, it was difficult to follow because of the lack of street lights, and because the car had no lights on."

When Lesurf was discovered at the Fisherman's car park, his car headlights had been switched back on, said Miss Mardell. The police car prevented him from driving away, and he was arrested.

Lesurf, of High Barns, Ely, told the court: "My side lights were on, I turned down the headlights."

Fining the teenager £100 with £60 costs and a £15 surcharge, and endorsing his licence with four points, presiding magistrate Mary Rone told Lesurf: "It was a silly thing to do, fortunately there was no accident.
