Cambridgeshire police were called into action on Friday when some well known faces from around Ely found themselves on the wrong side of the law – but all in the name of charity!

More than £3,000 was raised for Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals when six brave souls volunteered to take part in a charity event, Jail and Bail, organised by Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust.

Each volunteer found themselves being slapped into handcuffs and led away to a waiting police vehicle in front of friends and colleagues.

Police swooped on the reprobates and brought them to Poets House Hotel, in Ely, where they were locked away before having their fingerprints and mugshots taken, as well as enjoying breakfast, until they had raised bail money totalling £500 or more before being returned to work.

All six managed to raise the cash and were released by 12.30pm.

Among the list of charges were ‘Causing mass GBH – good body health’, ‘wearing lycra whilst in the office’ and over use of the phrase “leave it with me”.

Officers from the Special Constabulary were out making the arrests at venues across the city with Matthew Bradney, from the Atrium Club, John Thorogood, from Ward Gethin Archer, Rod Garnham, from Corkers Crisps, Katie Rollings, from PA Answer, John Merry, from Thorlabs, and Tesco’s Ian Westwood all taken into custody.

Jo Pearson, community fundraising manager at Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust, said: “These funds will help the hospital to support people and their families during their stay in Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals. Thank you to everyone who took part and special thanks to to Eclipse Photography and Spotted in Ely for their support.”
