A POLAROID photograph taken of motorist Daniel Gillett helped the police discover his true identity - he had given a false name when stopped - but officers later recognised him from the picture.

Gillett, 20, of High Barns, had been seen standing by an Astra car, and told an officer his name was Daniel Jones. He was asked to produce his driving documents at the police station, and the instant photograph was taken.

"Other police officers recognised him and he admitted who he was," said prosecutor Flynn Jennings at Ely courthouse on Thursday.

Gillett was not in court, but was convicted in his absence of driving without insurance, an MoT certificate or a driving licence in Wisbech Road at Littleport on September 30 last year. He was fined a total of £280 with £42 costs, and six points were endorsed on his driving record.
