A school, which was rated as making great progress in reading spelling and grammar, is looking for governors to join the team.

Ely St John’s Primary School has sent out a plea asking for anybody who has considered making a difference to education to consider getting involved.

The school said it was increasingly challenging to find governors who had the time and commitment to undertake the role.

Some people may be unaware of what is involved or are nervous about it, said governor, Ely mayor, councillor Lis Every, who said vacancies were coming up due to governors reaching the end of their four year term.

The team is currently looking for three co-opted governors who will be selected by the governing body.

The aim is to find people who want to make a positive difference to the life chances of children and want to share skills to make a difference.

“Would you enjoy being part of a team that provides critical challenge and support to the leadership team whose aim is driving up standards?

“If you can say ‘yes’ to all of these, consider investigating the role and putting yourself forward,” said Ms Every.

Being a governor is a real commitment, but is a rewarding and enjoyable experience that requires regular attendance at formal meetings, usually in the evening, although getting to know the school well requires some planned time in school during the day, she said.

Training is given. Schools are always looking for specific experience such as finance or business.
