Councillor John Palmer was among a small group of people who opposed plans to pull down the town’s redundant North Chapel in the early 1990s and succeeded in having the building listed by English Heritage.

He later acted as chairman of the Soham North Chapel Charitable Trust, securing grant funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to carry out vital repairs.

Cllr Palmer died in April last year, aged 85.

Now, Cllr Palmer’s contribution has been recognised with a specially made plaque, which was unveiled in the chapel watched by dignitaries and friends and family.

The current chairman of the charitable trust, Timothy Clark, and Lady Linda Vane Percy carried out the ceremony.
