The spaces, which have been subject of a campaign by Littleport Parish Council and East Cambridgeshire District Council, will be recommended for approval at the district council’s planning committee meeting on March 1.

The extension will see the car park’s capacity increase by 200 per cent, from 35 spaces to 115, and was applied for by the council in December to “reduce the dependency of the car and “ease congestion on some of main roads through the district.”

A deal was drawn up in 2013 thanks to a campaign by MP for North East Cambridgeshire, Steve Barclay and Littleport councillor, David Ambrose Smith, but was finally struck in November last year.

Littleport district and parish Councillor David Ambrose-Smith said: “This is fantastic news for local residents as well as those looking to relocate to Littleport. The extra spaces will ease congestion around the station gateway and will provide a direct link into the new station at Cambridge’s Science Park once opened.
