An Ely councillor says that it is “inevitable” that there will be a serious accident unless more is done to tackle speeding traffic in the area around Kings Avenue.

Councillor Alison Whelan, from the City of Ely Council, has launched a petition to get a crossing installed in Lynn Road, between Cam Drive and Kings Avenue.

So far, the petition, which will be passed to Cambridgeshire County Council, has attracted almost 100 signatories.

Cllr Whelan said: “There are many children that need to cross the road either to catch buses to school, or to make their way to Ely College. When the new school is built to the north of Cam Drive, the need to ensure there are adequate crossing points will increase further.

“The route from the A10 along Cam Drive, into Lynn Road and then onto Kings Avenue has been designated as the main transport route so that HGVs will avoid travelling through the city centre.

“The growth of North Ely to date has resulted in a significant increase in traffic along this route and the further planned developments will see a greatly increased level of traffic.

“The risk to pedestrians attempting to cross these roads is already serious, and will only get worse over the coming years.”

Councillor Whelan said that although a crossing in Lynn Road would solve some problems, she said that additional crossings in Kings Avenue and further along Lynn Road were also needed.

Cllr Whelan added: “We need safer crossings before there is a tragedy on this road.”
