A WILBURTON pensioner was attacked in her home and repeatedly stabbed in the neck and head.

Miraculously, Janet Smith, 64, was released from hospital and returned to her family just four days after Thursday evening's attack.

Police were called to her Berristead Close home a about 9pm after she raised the alarm.

Ms Smith had suffered neck and head injuries as well as cuts to her hands, and was taken to Cambridge's Addenbrooke's Hospital.

The attack comes just weeks after East Cambridgeshire Police held a five-week knife amnesty, and a report released yesterday (Wednesday) criticised the Government's strategy on tackling knife-related crime.

Statistics show knife use has increased nationwide over the past 12 months.

n Teenager Philip Layton, 18, also of Berristead Close, was arrested on Saturday and appeared at Cambridge Magistrates' Court on Monday charged with attempted murder and aggravated burglary. He was remanded in custody and will appear again at Cambridge Crown Court on August 14.
