A football match and fun day held in memory of the manager of the Ely Youth Colts for the last 10 years raised more than £7,000 for charity.
The family of Paul Scarrow organised the fundraiser in aid of The Mesothelioma Charitable Trust after he died in January 2018.
Paul’s wife, Lesley, said: “It’s been phenomenal and quite overwhelming really.
“So far we’ve raised £7,200 and there’s still more money coming in. It was an amazing day and everyone’s generosity has been great.”
A children’s football tournament in the morning saw 10 teams compete before a commemorative match which saw members of Ely City Colts - who are now all in their mid-30s - play against the Scarrow family team.
Hundreds of people enjoyed the great weather on Saturday (June 9) as well as face painting, a raffle, archery, ice cream, bouncy castle, name the teddy, beat the goalie, bowls, netball, welly wanging, cake stalls and more at Witchford Recreation Ground and Village Hall.
Lesley added: “The weather was gorgeous and it was lovely to see everybody and all the old players. You could still see the skill – they still had it, what Paul taught them. They could still play.

“The game ended with a 3-3 draw which was perfect really, because I didn’t know who to cheer for.”
Though there aren’t any plans for another fundraiser just yet – “we’re all exhausted from that for now” – Lesley and her family say they are happy to support anyone else raising money and awareness for the charity.
“I’d like to thank everyone for their generosity, their kind thoughts and hugs – I needed them. I’m overwhelmed, I can’t even think of a word. To realise that people cared, I really did appreciate it and it helped a lot.”
Debbie Saberton, who donated a three-tier cake that she had previously won, said: “Lovely day and well done for raising so much money.
“It’s a testament to how many people cared and appreciate what Paul and Lesley have done in Witchford.”
On the day a specialist nurse who looked after Paul gave out information about mesothelioma - a type of cancer that develops from the thin layer of tissue that covers many of the internal organs (known as the mesothelium). The most common area affected is the lining of the lungs and chest wall.
