Forty freezing passengers had to be rescued using ladders after a train without heating stalled near in Littleport this afternoon.

The train was travelling from Cambridge to King’s Lynn but it stalled near Black Horse Drove crossing.

British Transport Police attended the scene at 12.15pm and required the help of Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue to get everyone off the train safely.

Cambs Fire returned to their stations at 2.30pm.

They tweeted: “While crews are tackling the fire at @Blackbirds_Inn one of our other crews from Ely is currently assisting passengers stranded on a train near #Littleport. We hope to have everyone out soon.

“Just a reminder in case you’re stuck on the train near #Littleport we have a crew at the scene and we hope to have you out soon.”
