25 firefighters spend 10 hours tackling pallet fire on A10 at Chittering - the cause is under investigation

Two crews from Cambridge, one crew from Ely, another from Soham, the water carrier from Ramsey, the south roaming fire engine, and one crew from St Neots arrived to find a significant amount of scrap pallets well alight in a field near The Produce Connection Ltd at 1.23pm.

Crews created a water shuttle and used four jets to help extinguish the fire on Ely Road before allowing it to burn out safely.

All crews returned to their stations by 11.40pm and the fire was re-inspected overnight.

A Cambs Fire spokesman said: “Around 25 fire-fighters worked hard to get the fire under control and prevent it from spreading.

“The scene has been re-inspected again to ensure the area is safe.

“Great work by all the crews and emergency call handlers involved.

“A big thanks to the Tesco store in Milton for donating food and drinks to all of the firefighters involved. “The crews were humbled by the generosity of the staff at the store.”

In a separate incident an hour earlier, one crew from Soham and another from Cambridge were called to a stubble fire in a field near Broad Baulk, Stretham.

Crews arrived to find a fire in a field of standing crop. Firefighters used two hose reels to extinguish the blaze, before returning to their stations by 1.23pm.

In a third incident, at 3.07am yesterday (July 19), one crew from Ely and the water carrier were called to a fire in the open near the A10 at Little Thetford.

Firefighters used two hose reels and a jet to extinguish the fire. The crew returned to their station by 4.30am, before re-inspecting later in the morning.

The cause of all three fires – which are being treated as separate incidents - is under investigation.
