A CONVICTED paedophile, who served nine months in jail for indecently assaulting a young girl, was attacked on his doorstep in Ely by builder Christopher Jones.

Jones told grandfather Alec Atkin, that if he didn't sell his house and move out of the city he would kill him and jump on his grave, a court heard.

He accused Mr Atkin of being a "dirty old man" and raised his hand as if he were going to throttle him.

Jones hit Mr Atkin in the throat causing him to fall backwards and gag, Ely Magistrates Court was told on Tuesday.

He told his victim: "Hit me. I'll let you get the first punch in. Call the police. I don't mind."

The incident happened on December 13 last year, six months after Mr Atkin had returned to Ely following his prison sentence, the court heard.

Jones, 34, of New Barns Avenue, Ely admitted assaulting Mr Atkin.

Mitigating, James Yardy, told the court that Jones was ashamed of what he had done.

He said: "Thankfully the assault was at a low level and no injuries were sustained by the complainant. It was not a prolonged or sustained incident. It was a one-off incident where he lost control."

Jones was given a conditional discharge for two years and ordered to pay £35 costs.
