Former Ely Mayor Councillor Lis Every has handed over the proceeds of a year of fundraising for her mayoral charity Ely and District Volunteer Centre.

A series of high profile events held during Cllr Every’s year in office helped raise a whopping £8,000.

Cllr Every said: “I am absolutely delighted to be able to support the volunteers of Ely and to help to provide sustainability for the centre.

“In my second year as mayor of Ely my chosen charitable objective was to promote and support volunteering in Ely through publicity and the Volunteer Centre in particular to make it more sustainable

“Throughout the year by harnessing individuals, Ely Hereward Rotary Club, Ely Perspective and the Volunteer Centre itself high profile events have been held demonstrating the opportunities to volunteer and the benefits to the community as a whole. Volunteers have been visibly cleaning, litter picking and supporting events.”

Numerous events which supported the cause include: The Christmas pantomine, The Mayor’s Ball, An evening with Dave Doggett (Chairman Cambridge United) and a mile of coins on the High Street together with collections.

Cllr said: “In all over £8,000 has been raised for the benefit of the Volunteer Centre which will allow it to increase training of volunteers and purchase much needed equipment for the gardening team.”
