A RECENT countrywide otter survey shows otters are coming back to East Cambridgeshire and making it their home.
Otters are shy and reclusive creatures and most people in the area don't know that they live nearby and have never seen one.
The Wildlife Trust and Cambridgeshire Mammal Group is tracking the otters' progress with a series of five yearly countrywide surveys.
The survey confirmed that populations of otters on the Great Ouse, Ouse Washes, Lark and Little Ouse are still present and are also finding new sites on the uppermost reaches of the River Stour and Soham Lode.
Roger Featherstone, chairman of the local Mammal Group, said: "The Cambridgeshire Mammal Group has been involved with this survey for many years. Many of our members took part in the survey and we have a keen interest in the fortunes of this rare mammal."
