A three-day event offering people the chance to see some of Ely’s historic buildings for free will take place in September.

Open Heritage Weekend will run from September 14 to 16 and provide an opportunity for locals and visitors to take a look at some venues not usually open to the public.

It will begin with open night on the Friday when Oliver Cromwell’s House, Ely Cathedral, The Stained Glass Museum and Ely Museum all open their doors in the evening so that visitors can experience the atmospheric venues after dark.

Saturday is open tours with a variety of venues providing free guided tours.

This year the programme includes Sessions House as well as St Mary’s Church where visitors will have the chance to learn about the ancient art of campanology as well as having a go at bell ringing.

The weekend celebrations conclude on Sunday with Open Houses where visitors can have the opportunity of peeking inside two of the medieval cottages in Silver Street as well as the Old Porta, Prior Crauden’s Chapel and The Monastic Barn.

Tracey Harding, Visit Ely’s manager, said: “It is fitting that a city with so much heritage should once again be involved in this national celebration. This is an excellent opportunity to visit some of our much loved buildings and we thank all the venues for agreeing to be part of the weekend.”

Although the tours are all free, many have to be pre-booked and tickets sell out fast.
