ELY Cathedral will host senior officials and national sporting heroes as the London 2012 Olympic Roadshow rolls into the city this evening (Thursday).

Olympic chairman, Sebastian Coe, will head up a business meeting in the cathedral's Lady Chapel to discuss the economic benefits of the games for Ely.

The three-week roadshow has been organised to say 'thank you' for the support given by the eastern region during the original campaign to bid for the chance to hold the games.

It was due to be held last summer but was put on hold because of the London terrorist bombings the day after it was announced that the capital had been selected as the Olympic host.

"The East of England was one of London 2012's biggest advocates and it's great that they are coming to the region to personally thank us for the effort and support we gave them," said Stephen Castle, chairman of Nations and Regions East.

"The business community and the wider public really want the games to be a success. The region is working hard to ensure that not only do we get to experience the world's greatest sport event, but we also benefit from the cultural and commercial opportunities it will bring."

The specially-branded bus, carrying images of some of the country's most famous Olympians and internationally-known locations, began its journey last Thursday in London's Trafalgar Square and today will it will visit Brentwood, Essex where Olympic mountain bike competitions will take place.

The next stop will be Broxbourne in Hertfordshire which will host the games' canoeing events.

Finally it will head to Ely Cathedral to be joined by Ely's Olympic javelin thrower, Goldie Sayers.

Ely Cathedral was chosen to host the roadshow as one of the region's most remarkable buildings.

At the Lady Chapel Lord Coe, David Higgins, chief executive of the Olympic Delivery Agency and Richard Ellis, chairman of the East of England Development Agency will address business people and other dignitaries about the benefits the Olympics can bring to East Cambridgeshire.

Lord Coe said: "The national roadshow will help to ensure that regional cities and businesses feel part of the 2012 experience and provide them with the information about our plans and the opportunities to be part of the world's biggest sporting event.
