On Sunday visitors to the house were given a snapshot into the life of one of England’s most iconic and divisive men, and had the chance to ask questions of its occupants as they went about their daily tasks.

Attendees encountered a variety of interesting characters including a veteran soldier, returning from battle in England’s first Civil War, and a military surgeon who demonstrated his preferred techniques for dealing with gruesome injuries and diseases.

Mike Rouse, who attended the day, said: “Mrs Cromwell was in the kitchen, the great man himself was there and a lady of the house who was spinning, while there was a visiting barber and a bookbinder.

“It really brought history alive.”

Tracey Harding, tourism and town centre manager for East Cambridgeshire District Council, said the event was “a fantastic opportunity for people to gain a real insight into what everyday life would have been like in the 17th century. It also highlights one of Ely’s hidden treasures.
