The Old Fire Engine House Restaurant & Gallery in Ely is hosting the 50th anniversary exhibition for local artists Anthony Day and Richard Neal.

Watercolour artist Anthony, who has exhibited every year since the restaurant first opened in 1968, said: “In the spring of 1968 a lady attending the private view of the Cambridge Drawing Society exhibition in the Guildhall approached three of us standing together about the possibility of exhibiting pictures at the newly opened Old Fire Engine House Restaurant in Ely.

“Six months on, I was approached to mount a Christmas exhibition so I put together 15 pictures and the show was a success.

“Since then I have exhibited no less than 50 shows, taking me into my 90s and making the proprietor, Ann Jarman, a friend.”

People enjoyed homemade mulled wine at the December preview while they browsed Anthony’s large gouache paintings of Fen landscapes through the seasons and Richard Neal’s watercolour depictions of life in the Fens are on show until December 23.

Entry to the gallery is free. For info on monthly previews, exhibitions and opening times visit www.theoldfireenginehouse.co.uk
