COUNCIL officers are cracking down on illegal taxi drivers and have warned they will prosecute.

Across the district, licensing officers are inspecting taxis, talking to taxi companies and vetting drivers to ensure the safety of passengers.

Elizabeth Bailey, East Cambridgeshire District Council's principal environmental health officer, said: "Unlicensed taxi drivers are not regulated and often ply for fares around pubs and clubs, hoping for passengers to mistake them for a licensed cab or be too keen to get home to care.

"We would urge everyone to ensure that before they get into a taxi, they check there is a taxi plate on the rear of the vehicle, and the driver is wearing a badge.
