SAY No to Mereham campaigners are issuing a final plea to local people to object to Multiplex's plans for changes to the A10.

Bill Hunt, district councillor for Stretham, said: "The changes they have made are an attempt on the part of the developer to confuse amateurs like me.

"I had understood the Mereham inquiry was based on the councils' objection to an application made in 2005 and this constitutes a big change in their plans."

"Multiplex has said it will allocate only half a car parking space per house at Mereham to encourage more people to use public transport. As a result, it estimates there will be only 193 more cars queuing on the road at peak times, but that's 193 we don't need."

He added: "Their plans will totally destroy any chance we have of getting to work. Putting five sets of traffic lights up at Waterbeach is going to bring the whole area to a standstill."

Residents have until tomorrow (Friday) to make written objections to the A10 plans. "I must emphasise that these letters should only be objecting to the A10 traffic and transport changes, not objections to Mereham itself," said Cllr Hunt. Letters can be emailed to lynette.duncan@personaassociates.co.uk, quoting reference APP/W0530/A/06/2014216.

Cllr Hunt also raised the issue that recycling and waste disposal company Donarbon, situated on the A10 near Waterbeach, has just entered into a £750million public private partnership with Cambridgeshire County Council.

"There is no question that Donarbon is going to expand and the amount of HGV traffic will increase," said Cllr Hunt. "How are they going to go about their business if Multiplex's plans go ahead?"

Multiplex's plan to widen the A10 from Stretham to Denny End, provide additional lanes to the north of the Milton interchange, no right turn at the northern Landbeach junction and a new footbridge at Butt Lane. Drawings of the proposals are available at East Cambridgeshire District Council in Ely and Haddenham Library.

The Highways Agency, which has responsibility for the A14, have withdrawn their objections to Mereham as proposed traffic changes now only relate to the A10, which the county council is responsible for.
