RON Barber, of Littleport, died at Hinchingbrooke Hospital on January 7, aged 85.

Born in Littleport, Mr Barber worked as a grocery store manager before he retired and later worked at the RAF Hospital in Ely as a clothing store manager. He served for five years, from 1940-1945, as a sergeant in the Middle East.

He was a member of the Littleport Parish Council for a number of years and in that time saw the opening of the Littleport bypass, Littleport Leisure Centre and St George's Medical Centre. He also served on the Littleport Show Committee as well as being chairman for the Over 60/70s Club. Mr Barber also played the cornet in the Royal British Legion Brass Band.

In his spare time he was a keen gardener and regularly exhibited his skills in the Littleport Show Horticultural Marquee.

He was married to his wife, Phyllis, for 55 years. Ron is also survived by his daughter Susan Constable of Godmanchester, grandchildren Mark and Emma and great granddaughter, Katie.
