FRANK SAMUEL OGDEN

FRANK Ogden of Ely died at home in Beech Lane on September 1, aged 87.

Mr Ogden was born in March on May 18, 1920. He went to school in March and spent many happy hours cycling to various destinations, including London, as a member of a March Cycling Club.

He volunteered for the Royal Navy at the outbreak of World War Two. He was a stoker and then a leading stoker on various ships including Victory, Revenge and Birmingham. On his discharge, he joined the Royal Naval Association and attended their local meetings regularly over the last several years until ill health prevented him from doing so.

Mr Ogden married Ivy in 1943. They made their first home in Victoria Street in Ely and then, around 1959, moved to Beech Lane where they remained for the rest of their lives.

He became a painter and decorator for Sindalls of Ely and then was employed by the local council and carried out work on many council houses in the old Ely Urban area.

He was very fond of cats and for several years he and his wife went daily to a nearby derelict farm, taking food to feral cats there. He and Ivy were never without pet cats at home in all the years they lived in Beech Lane.

The funeral took place at St Mary's Church on September 12 with members of the Royal Naval Association forming a guard of honour. During the service a member piped and the Last Post was sounded.
