ARTHUR Setchell, of Vineyard Way, Ely, died on September 20 at Addenbrooke's Hospital, aged 86. Born in Haddenham, Arthur attended The King's School and after leaving he joined his father in his agricultural merchants business H T Setchell & Son Ltd, in Haddenham.
In 1971, Mr Setchell disposed of his interests in the firm and became club secretary at Thetford and later Newmarket Golf Clubs, while at the same time assisting his wife in running their guest house business, which later became the Nyton Hotel in Barton Road, Ely.
During the Second World War, Mr Setchell served in the Army and was evacuated from Dunkirk. He undertook various postings, and was involved in the invasion in Italy.
In his youth he played tennis to a high standard. In 1961 he was one of the initial members of Ely City Golf Club and was club captain in 1971 and 1980 (one of only two people to captain the club twice). He served on many committees of the golf club and was president of the club from 2001-2003. He was a keen bridge player and member of the Ely Bridge Club. Arthur was also a member of Ely Rotary Club and more recently of the Probus Club.
Mr Setchell married firstly Doris (nee Ward) in 1943; she died in 1950. He married secondly Rosalyn (nee Bennett) in 1952; she died in 1994. Lastly he married Sheila (nee Harrison) in 1996, who survives him. He is also survived by his children from his first marriage, Richard of Ely, Jennifer, of Honley, Yorkshire, and Katherine of Winterton on Sea and Timothy of Stretham and Robert of Ely, from his second marriage five grandchildren and great grand-daughter.
A cremation service took place at Cambridge followed by a thanksgiving at St Mary's Church, Ely on October 2, led by Canon Fred Kilner.
