LITTLEPORT villagers are to decide how up to £500,000 should be spent to improve their community facilities.

They are being asked whether the cash should be used for a new community centre or upgrading facilities and green space.

Most of the cash has come from an agreement with developers Cannon Kirk, building 650 homes at Highfields.

If residents decide they want a purpose-built community centre, land has already been earmarked at The Paddocks, and Healthy Living - East Cambridgeshire has promised to donate £40,000.

A team from Cambridgeshire ACRE will be outside the village Co-op on Tuesday and also at the Littleport Horticultural Show on Saturday, handing out questionnaires.

Shirley Craig of Hoof Close, Littleport, was keen to give her full backing for a new community resource.

She said: "Once they have finished building all the houses, we are going to need a new community resource.

"It is just not appropriate to extend the town hall, and a new building will also give people the incentive to go and use the community facilities."

Teresa Legge of Wellington Street, however, did not see the need for a new centre.

She said: "I think investment in Littleport is fabulous, but if there is more money to be spent then I think it should be invested in existing buildings and infrastructure, rather than in a more isolated secondary outlet for activities."

To have your say pick up a questionnaire from Cambridgeshire ACRE's offices at 32 Main Street, Littleport, local shops, Littleport Leisure Centre, the library, the Barn or the village hall.

Alternatively, call Diana Walsh on 01353 865035.

The results from the questionnaire will be announced at the end of next month.
